GANNAWARRA Shire Council has welcomed moves by the State Government to ban smoking at a number of outdoor areas after Health Minister David Davis announced a further step in a long line of tobacco initiatives.
The government is proposing extending bans to children's playgrounds, public swimming pools, children's sporting grounds and other recreational areas such as skate parks.
Shire mayor, Cr Neville Goulding said Council has been actively considering its policy position in connection with smoking in public places.
"We particularly want our public facilities and spaces to be attractive to residents and visitors, and fully reflect the healthy lifestyle for which the shire is increasingly gaining recognition," he said.
Fellow councillor, Brian Gibson said that council looks forward to reviewing the reform issues paper and providing comments.
"The new laws aimed at protecting children are a necessary step in improving the health and wellbeing of not only our children, but our community as a whole," he said.
"We as a council are fully supportive of the government's plans, and will provide comments on the technical issues paper once released later this month."
The State Government's proposed changes are expected before parliament later this year once public consultation is completed.
