MOTORISTS heading to Melbourne via the Calder Alternative Highway will be forced to detour through Lockwood from next Thursday for three months as works continue at the new $86 million Calder Highway interchange at Ravenswood.
Melbourne-bound traffic will be closed on the Calder Alternative Highway between Bendigo-Maldon Road and the Calder Highway.
The Calder Alternative Highway will remain open Marong-bound.
This closure will allow major work to continue on the western side of the Calder Highway to build the northern structure for the new elevated circular road and to build the new Calder Highway carriageways.
VicRoads said a signed detour road will be in place for drivers, including freight vehicles, via Lockwood Road and the Calder Highway.
The signed detour is expected to add up to 10 minutes' travel time for southbound drivers.
As part of the works, the U-turn bay near Beilharz Road will also close permanently from August 17.
To perform a U-turn safely, drivers and local residents wanting to travel southbound on the Calder Highway should use the U-turn bay located near Belvoir Park Road.
"Access to residential properties located on the closed section of the Calder Alternative Highway will be maintained at all times," a VicRoads spokesperson said.
