GANNAWARRA Shire Council has celebrated National Meals on Wheels Day.
This day recognises the work contributed to local communities from more than 78,700 volunteers across the country.
Gannawarra mayor, Cr Brian Gibson said that Meals on Wheels was much more than just providing a meal.
"Meals on Wheels offers three services in one; a meal delivered to your door, a safety and well-being check and a service that brings people together," he said.
"For our clients, Meals on Wheel volunteers are a friendly face, someone to chat to and someone who cares about their well-being."
Last financial year, Gannawarra Shire Council's Meals on Wheels volunteers delivered 15,510 meals to residents in Kerang and Cohuna.
Acting community well-being director, Narelle O'Donoghue says volunteers are critical to the success of the Meals on Wheels program.
"This fantastic service is able to be offered to our community because of the time, effort and dedication of all our wonderful volunteers. Without our volunteers this vital community service would not be able to be offered."
On behalf of Gannawarra Shire Council, Mrs O'Donoghue expressed thanks to all of the Meals on Wheels volunteers for their time and effort they put in to deliver this service to the community and remind volunteers to register their interest in the coming performance of 'Glorious!' being held at the Leitchville Memorial Hall on Wednesday, September 20.
