THREE of the district's Central Murray Football Netball League lead the competition heading into this weekend's AFL Victoria Community Championship break, with a fourth just outside the top five.
The Mallee Eagles, Cohuna Kangas and Kerang are well on the way to playing finals in September, with Koondrook/Barham two points outside the top five.
Kerang remained in touch with the top two following a 46-point win against Tyntynder, bouncing back from the club's first loss in close to 12 months one week earlier.
Jarryd Pertzel (four goals) and Riley Hird (three goals) led the way for the visitors, who took control of the game thanks to kicking with a strong breeze in the second and final quarters.
The win leaves the Blues six points off the Eagles, with the Lalbert-based team recording a fifth consecutive victory of the season.
Although inaccurate in front of goal, six goals to one in the second half helped the Eagles produce a 23-point win at Balranald.
Caine Hillier and Wes Bennett booted two goals each for the visitors, who were challenged by the 'Roos during the second term.
The win leaves the Eagles one victory clear at the top of the ladder after the Kangas had the bye at the weekend.
Meanwhile, Koondrook/Barham recorded a second win of the season at the weekend, defeating Lake Boga by 22 points.
The Magpies led by two points at the main break, but the Raiders kept the hosts goalless in the third term to move to 2-3 after five rounds.
Cameron Arnold and Phil Smith kicked two goals each for the victors, who are two points outside the top five.
