THE Gannawarra Energy Storage System is on schedule to commence commissioning and operations in September.

The Storage System will be integrated with the Gannawarra Solar Farm, creating the country's largest integrated battery and solar farm.

Works began in March 2018 after the Federal and Victorian governments announced they would each provide up to $25 million in funding for the installation of two lithium-ion battery storage facilities, one in Kerang and one in Ballarat.

The Gannawarra Solar Farm is owned by Wirsol and Edify Energy, who are using Tesla powerpack batteries for the storage system.

The integrated facility will be capable of operating at full capacity for two hours or of powering 800 homes for 24-hours, and will be a part of the most sophisticated energy storage initiative in Australia, according to the Victorian Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D'Ambrosio.

Site employers representative, Kris Fulton said that all of the 400 powerpacks and 50 inverters have been installed on their footings, and the installation of the DC cables that connect each of the batteries to the inverters will likely be completed by the end of the week.

"The AC cables should be completed in the next two or three weeks," Mr Fulton said.

"These are the cables that connect the inverters to the transformers. All of the transformer kiosks have been installed onto their footings. These take the 440 volts AC from the inverters and step it up to 33,000 volts," he said.

"We are on track with schedule and should start commissioning works by the end of the month," he said.

Mr Fulton said the site has attracted attention from the region's members of parliament.

"We had Andrew Broad MP visit the solar farm last month. He also had a tour of the battery and Mark Gepp MP also did a tour a little while before Andrew toured the site," he said.
