A MAN with a lifetime of community service has been awarded Gannawarra's 2019 Citizen of the Year honour.

Dick Walters has been involved in various aspects of the Murrabit community for decades and was a tireless advocate for irrigators throughout his working life as a citrus grower.

Kaila Wilson was announced as 2019 Young Citizen of the Year, acknowledging the 16-year-old's positive contribution to improving the mental and physical health of young people in the Cohuna community.The awards were announced by the mayor, Cr Lorraine Learmonth at a civic reception. Both awards will be formally presented at Australia Day celebrations tomorrow.

Cr Learmonth congratulated the six nominees for the award, describing them all as winners.

The Citizen of the Year decision represents official recognition of Mr Walters' extensive contribution to the Murrabit community, which can be traced back to 1946.

That was when he first picked up a racquet at the Murrabit Tennis Club, sparking a long-term association that included terms as club president and secretary.

Mr Walters is a life member of the Murrabit Golf Club, which he joined in 1957, again going on to become president and secretary.

Even in his twenties, Mr Walters was heavily involved with the Murrabit Social Club, reflecting his gregarious nature and desire to foster a rich community life. The social club proved to be another organisation in which he ascended to the presidency.

Beyond sport and social life, Mr Walters put up his hand for duty with the local fire brigade.

He served on Murrabit school committees between the 1960s and 1970s.
