Arson suspect seen running

A PERSON was seen running away shortly after a fire was detected in an unoccupied house at Kerang on Tuesday night, police have been told.

Three fire crews were called to the Hawthorne Court premises at 8pm.

Audible smoke detectors in the Department of Human Services house were activated by smoke emanating from a fire inside the rear of the house.

Firefighters were forced to break through the front door of the house and found a fire in the laundry that had spread into the ceiling.

Senior Sergeant Ash Ford said that police were told that a male person was seen running away shortly after the fire was noticed.

"We ask anyone who saw anything suspicious to contact us," Senior Sergeant Ford said.

Police forensic officers inspected the scene on Wednesday and gathered evidence.
