CMFNL - Kangas' repeat effort

THE Cohuna Kangas will look to match their efforts of 12 months ago with a fourth consecutive Central Murray Football Netball League win of the season tomorrow against Tyntynder.

Scott Beattie's side sits second on the ladder going into round four, and a home win against the Bulldogs will leave the competition's southernmost side well placed before the team next plays on May 26 at Kerang.

The Kangas' broke a four-year losing streak against Tooleybuc/Manangatang six days' ago, with Beattie and Harrison Keely leading the way in the club's 47-point win.

It was a different story for the Bulldogs, who conceded 11 of the first 12 goals of the match last weekend to go down to Balranald by 55 points.

Tyntynder missed the on-field presence of coach, Justin Ellis thanks to a hamstring injury and if he remains on the sidelines, Christopher Anderson will dominate in the ruck for the hosts.

The Bulldogs' lack of height in defence will enable both Beattie and Keely to replicate their efforts of last Saturday at Tooleybuc, whilst the likes of Tom Toma and Joel Helman will be too strong in the midfield for the visitors' key ball users, led by Michael Dedini.

The Bulldogs defeated the Kangas by eight points when the teams last met in round 10, 2017, but tomorrow's hosts boast a much stronger side than the one that took to the field 12 months ago.

PREDICTION: The Cohuna Kangas will win by 30 points.

Raiders seek top-five position

KOONDROOK/BARHAM will aim to move into the Central Murray Football Netball League top five tomorrow with a win against fellow New South Wales-based side, Balranald.

It has been a stop-start season so far for the Raiders, who have not been able to produce consecutive wins.

The border side struggled against 2017 grand finalists, Woorinen last weekend in a 52-point loss, whilst Balranald's 55-point win against Tyntynder snapped an eight-match losing streak.

The way the 'Roos dominated the Bulldogs in the opening half of last weekend's game will be something Tom May and the hosts' coaching unit will need to be wary of.

Former Western Bulldogs player, Lindsay Gilbee was prolific in the forward line for Balranald last weekend, and if the goalkicker plays and gets on top of his match-up against Matt Dean, the 'Roos will remain in the top five.

However, if Gilbee does not play, it will be up to the visitors' midfielders – led by Cameron Barret and ruckman, Ben Fuller – to lead the way.

Tom May and Tom Lamb will be prolific for the hosts in the middle of the ground, whilst Cameron Arnold could have another dominant day in front of goal if Nicholas Gooch cannot contain the spearhead.

Balranald's last visit to Barham produced a 38-point win to the 'Roos back in April 2017, whilst the Raiders recorded a similar result when the teams last met in July.

PREDICTION: Koondrook/Barham will win by 30 points.

Premiers' run to continue

ONE of the longest running winning streaks in the Central Murray Football Netball League is set to grow tomorrow, with Kerang favourites to defeat Lake Boga.

The six-time reigning premiers have not lost the Magpies since their run of 10 consecutive grand final appearances began in 2008, and tomorrow's visitors have a challenge even to challenge the Blues.

Kerang strengthened its line-up in last weekend's 39-point win against Nyah-Nyah West United, with coach, Travis Matheson kicking five goals in his first match back after having a shoulder reconstructed in the pre-season.

The game also saw the club debut of Nathan Brown, with the former Nighcliff captain already settling into the team's structure.

Although renowned as a key defender in the Northern Territory Football League, Brown led the way in the midfield and forward line, giving extra support to the likes of Marty Kelly, Ryan Gillingham and ruckman, Troy Davis.

This will make things difficult for the Magpies in the centre of the ground, who will look to Wes Harrison, Karl Robertson and Matt Harrop to get the ball to their forwards.

The Blues' young defenders, under the guidance of Patrick Taban and Brandon Hayes, will be too strong for the Nathaniel Holmes-Brown-led forward line, whilst Matheson and the Blues' midfielders could have a day out in front of goal.

Kerang won by an average winning margin of 75 points when the teams met on two occasions last year. This will be close to tomorrow's overall result.

PREDICTION: Kerang will win by 60 points.

Eagles to remain undefeated

THE MALLEE Eagles will look to continue their recent record against fellow Central Murray Football Netball League side, Tooleybuc/Manangatang tomorrow.

The Lalbert-based team has won its past two games against the Saints, and are strong favourites to remain undefeated tomorrow before a May 12 trip to Balranald.

The Eagles recorded a 67-point win against Swan Hill last weekend, thanks to a six-goal haul from Saad Saad, whilst the Saints went down the Cohuna Kangas by 47 points.

The visitors will regain Brenton Chislett tomorrow after the ruckman missed last weekend's game, but the effort Brodie Hodson showed gives coach, Lachie Gleeson another tall advantage.

However, the outcome of this match will be determined in the midfield. If Gleeson, Zac Nicholls and Braden Hender can get the ball to the Zachary Peake-led forward line, the visitors will have a strong chance of winning.

On the other hand, if Angus McKenzie can win his ruck battle with Chislett and get the ball to the likes of Beau Bennett and Boden Alexander, the hosts will record a fourth win of the season.

PREDICTION: The Mallee Eagles will win by 40 points.

• IN the weekend's other game, Swan Hill and Nyah-Nyah West United will aim to produce their first wins of the season when the teams meet at the Swan Hill Showgrounds.

Woorinen has the bye, with the 2017 grand finalists to play Nyah-Nyah West United on May 12.
