QUAMBATOOK Football and Netball Club has its eye on greater on-field success in the 2020 season and hope the recruitment of a second coach to the senior football side will bolster their chances.
The Saints started the 2019 season with Graham Davis at the coaching helm but despite his wealth of knowledge, being based in Melbourne presented challenges to the side.
Club stalwart Gregor Knight took over the role mid way through the season after Davis made the decision not to continue.
As a playing coach, Knight found the job challenging and reiterated what many other football clubs are currently saying.
"It's obviously a benefit to have a second set of eyes out there, someone who can focus solely on the game from a coaching perspective," he said.
"The fact I am still playing makes it hard.
"So we are very pleased with the appointment of Tim Free as co-coach and look forward to all he brings."
Tim Free has a long history with the Saints having played most of his senior football in the red, white and black and has also coached the seniors on several occasions.
Knight said Free's local connection would be valuable and the club was already actively recruiting for the new season.
"We have had a great retainment rate with all of the boys from last year resigning and we have also recruited a few younger local boys from the area," he said.
"We have a good core group of guys and recruitment will be aimed at complimenting that.
"The club is in great shape and we're really excited about the strong position the club is in.
"It's a fantastic club and very inclusive and we pride ourselves on being open to anyone who wants a game.
"Off-field the club is thriving and we'd really like to change that result to on-field as well next year."
The 27-year-old Knight's new coaching partner is well familiar with Knight as well as the club.
"I used to play with Gregor and I have also coached him as well so it should be an easy partnership," Free said.
"We are committed to our club being successful because everyone works so hard at the club.
"We are confident that if we can bring the right people through recruitment, the people who match the culture here, we can have greater success on the field next year."
Free said the side would start training in December this year rather than January.
"We'll start a bit earlier but that's not because our guys need the extra training for fitness, they've always worked hard," he said.
"It's more to give the new guys a chance to gel with the team earlier.
"We're excited and looking forward to having success again this year."
The Saints finished seventh (second bottom) this year with two wins under their belt.
Throughout much of the season they showed promise but could never quite deliver on a consistent basis.
Quambatook last featured in a premiership in 2015 without success and their most recent premiership was back in 1997.
Free previously coached the side in 2009, 2010, 2001 and 2017.
