Aviation enthusiasts believe the sky is the limit after the first local aircraft flying lessons on Saturday.

The recently incorporated Cohuna Aviation Club has announced a new strategic partnership for a Deniliquin-based flying school to provide pilot training at the local aerodrome.

Three local trainee pilots who have completed training at Deniliquin will now be able to have lessons locally, following approval for Wettenhall Flight Training Services to operate at Cohuna.

Cohuna Aviation Club chairman, Andrew Gibbs, who is also a trainee pilot, said the partnership opened up so many opportunities for all age groups to learn to fly within Gannawarra.

The Member for Murray Plains, Peter Walsh, who has joined the club's board, witnessed the first lessons to be held at Cohuna.

"This is a fantastic reflection on what the board has been able to do in ensuring that aviation training services are available within a convenient distance in our electorate," he said.

Aviation has been identified as a key component in accommodating Cohuna's business and lifestyle growth requirements.

The recently formed Cohuna Aviation Club regards the introduction of local pilot training as one of the many steps the club has taken to grow the district's aviation base.

Club chairman, Andrew Gibbs said there were 19 pilots in Cohuna and seven aircraft, with an expectation that within four years that will increase to 25 pilots and 14 operating aircraft.

Mr Gibbs said discussions with the shire about the proposed development of desired aerodrome infrastructure collapses in 2015.

"We had worked with council on a major aerodrome plan for almost two years, with leading business and community leaders' support and included a runway extension of 350 metres, terminal/club house, as well as 24-hour refuelling and space for seven new hangars" he said.
