AN ABATTOIR is a step closer to being built in Barham thanks to the backing of the local council and despite a push back from opponents.

Murray River council confirmed its intention in a meeting this week to help a local cooperative set up a small-scale "micro-abattoir" on Gonn Road, near Moulamein Road, just northwest of Barham.
