Call for calm

POLICE don't want a "lynch mob mentality" forming in Kerang, urging locals not to take matters into their own hands.

That follows complaints to Kerang Police of alleged erratic behaviour and dangerous driving in the town.

Residents have subsequently expressed frustration through social media posts and calls to Gannawarra Times for a perceived lack of police action in relation to the complaints.

But police moved to allay community fears of inaction this week, assuring residents that the complaints are being treated seriously.

Sergeant Andrew Neil of Kerang Police stressed that investigations must be conducted rigorously and fairly.

He acknowledged that can take considerable time, prompting people to believe nothing is being done.

Sergeant Neil confirmed police have received reports of alleged erratic behaviour in Kerang.

However, he said that while the matters are being investigated, it was not appropriate to reveal the specifics of the allegations or those people involved.

"People are saying things and we need to establish whether it's actually occurred," Sergeant Neil said.

"We've got a couple of avenues of investigation in relation to the behaviours of all and sundry because I don't want a lynch mob mentality forming in Kerang."

He urged people to continue reporting any behaviour they consider is inappropriate.

"We rely on the community to report things to us and we will deal with what's going on," Sergeant Neil said.

He encouraged people to provide any footage they have of alleged erratic behaviour.

"In regards to erratic behaviour, if people have things on their dashcam or their mobile phones certainly let us know," he said.
