Pirates prepare to rock the boat

ST JOSEPH'S Primary School students in Kerang have been very busy this term rehearsing for their whole school musical production Don't Rock the Boat. Don't Rock the Boat is a musical script written by Elaine Keely of Cohuna.

The story begins at the annual pirates' picnic where the pirates join in many activities, including the annual treasure hunt.

There's lots of interesting characters within the story, which will be brought to life throughout the production.

While senior students will take on the main roles, the production will see all students take to the stage for the performance.

Performing Arts Teacher Alicia Makeham said the students were starting to get quite nervous but were looking forward to showcasing their talents in front of their parents, friends and wider community.

"They've been working really hard remembering lines and songs and trying to control their nerves about performing on stage," Ms Makeham said.

"It's a big thing for anyone to perform on stage and it's natural to feel nervous, but getting outside of their comfort zone and proving to themselves they can do it is such a fantastic way to develop their life skills.

"Performing is a great opportunity and I think the students are really excited to showcase their abilities."

Ms Makeham said the students had taken ownership of the production, writing invitations, organising props, designing tickets and programs and advertising the show.

The project has also enabled the students to express themselves.

"Each term we have a different aspect which the school focuses on, and for students to be able to happily express themselves and find what they love to do has been an important area of concentration this term," Ms Makeham said.

"The Don't Rock the Boat performance, and learning about performing arts in general, has been a lovely way to tie in this theme."

Principal Chris Mitchell said the performance provided an opportunity for the students to showcase their talents and see their hard work come to fruition.

"It's great to see the whole school getting involved in different components," Mr Mitchell said.

The performance will take place on Wednesday, September 18.
