A SMALL smoking ceremony was held outside MDAS (Mallee District Aboriginal Services) in Kerang to mark the beginning of National Reconciliation Week on Wednesday.

Speaking at the event, Elder Esther Kirby paid her respects to the Barapa Barapa, Wemba Wemba, Dja Dja Wurrung and Yorta Yorta peoples of the area.

She also recognised the old people who "fought against the odds" for their rights.
