‘True gentleman’ remembered

FORMER Victorian senator John Madigan, who died this week aged 53, was remembered locally as "a true gentleman" and "too nice a bloke to be a politician".

Mr Madigan, a former blacksmith and boilermaker, was elected to the federal parliament as a DLP (Democratic Labour Party) senator in 2010 but quit the party in 2014, and served as an Independent until 2016, also launching the Manufacturing and Farming Party.
