Unique Bedford Sudan project

SOME old district vehicles are apparently set for a new lease on life on another continent.

Cohuna resident Max Fehring found out about the rehabilitation scheme by chance when he was having coffee in King George St recently, where a truck pulled up at the nearby service station.

On the back of it was a small Bedford of a type Mr Fehring knew well.

He said the model was in common use on farms in the 1960s and '70s.

"These trucks were readily available and became important to farmers because of their reliability and price and their ability to shift quite a fair reasonable load of goods," he said.

Mr Fehring had a brief chat with the driver, who originally hailed from Sudan.

"He informed me that he buys such trucks and puts some together for shipping to Africa, where they'll be repaired and put to work in many communities - I assume within Sudan," he said.

Mr Fehring's experience living and working in Tanzania gave him an appreciation of the region and an interest in the project.

"Sadly, we didn't have long enough to talk but it was a most interesting conversation," he said.

"I've given him my details and hope he makes contact in the near future as I'm interested to follow through the whole story back to Sudan, where the trucks will end up.

"Just a great initiative by this young man and those supporting him."
